GENERAL DUTIES:
Prepare and organize the operating room with instrumentation and equipment, assist surgeons during surgical procedure, and maintain a sterile environment
REPORTING: Reports to the Surgical Nurse Manager.
SPUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
WORKING CONDITIONS: May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Prepares operating room for surgical procedures, assembles supplies, instruments, and equipment. Assists in clean-up of rooms between procedures and at the end of the schedule. Assists in monitoring and maintaining instruments, supplies, and equipment in the unit. Maintains proficiency in knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and AORN / AAMI standards of asepsis. Participates in the sponge, needle, and instruments count with the circulating nurse as needed. Responsible for identifying and preserving specimens received during surgery. Reports to supervisor any unusual occurrences, breaks in technique, malfunctioning equipment, any unsafe condition or potential hazard. Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Maintains the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of the patient. Participates in the OSC emergency, fire, and disaster drills. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations. Follows all OSC Policies and Procedures. Attends required in-services and educational programs. Performs other related duties as requested or assigned. • Assists physician in performance of procedures or test in clinical setting. •Assists physician in wound care, application of splints and dressings, and dressing changes.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of the principles and practices techniques of medical and surgical care to assist in providing patient care and treatment. Knowledge of surgical positioning of patients. Knowledge of surgical procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of a recognized and accredited Surgical Technologist Program. NBSTA Certification as a surgical technologist preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience preferred but new grads will be considered.
